Hotel and Restaurant Fit-Out in Finland: M1 Emission Class, Fire Doors and Sourcing from Turkey

Helsinki, Tampere and Turku have added hotel rooms quickly in recent years, and Lapland’s resorts add more every season. Finnish fit-out projects share a way of working: precise, documented, and unusually focused on indoor air quality. This guide covers what a Finnish hotel or restaurant project expects from a joinery manufacturer, and how we deliver it from Istanbul.

M1: the Finnish question

Finland’s M1 emission classification for building materials, run by the Building Information Foundation RTS, sets limits on emissions such as formaldehyde and VOCs. Many Finnish hotel owners and public clients specify M1-classified materials for interiors, and some extend the requirement to fixed furniture. We build with E1 boards as standard and can supply M1-classified boards, lacquers and adhesives on request, with the certificates in the documentation folder. Ask for M1 at the RFQ stage; it affects material selection and price.

Fire doors and the Finnish decree

Finnish fire safety requirements for buildings are set by the decree on fire safety (848/2017), which uses the European classes: EI30 and EI60 to EN 13501-2, tested to EN 1634-1. Hotel bedroom doors are typically EI30 with smoke control and a self-closing device. We supply test and classification reports for the door set as delivered and tell you before quoting whether your specification needs additional national documentation.

The Finnish palette

Birch first as veneer, as solid edges, as the grain that reads as Finnish then ash and oak; painted fronts in whites and soft greys; linoleum-faced desks and panels; felt and wool through partners. Sequence-matched veneer, matte lacquer, and hardware by Blum or Hettich.

Restaurant and bar joinery

Bar counters with integrated equipment cut-outs, service stations, wall panelling and banquette bases, host desks built to the designer’s drawings, with the finishes that survive a Finnish winter of wet coats and salted floors: HPL and lacquer on horizontals, solid edges, moisture-resistant cores near the floor.

Customs, VAT and delivery

Finland is an EU member: duty-free import with an ATR certificate; import VAT 25.5 %, reported in the VAT return. Road freight from Istanbul to Helsinki takes about 6–8 days via Sweden or road plus ferry via Germany and the Baltic. Full truck for hotel projects, groupage for a restaurant.

Programme

Mock-up room 3–4 weeks; production 8–14 weeks for a 60–120 room hotel, phased by floor; restaurants 6–8 weeks. Installation by your contractor from our drawings, with our supervisor on site for the first phase, or by our crew.
