Furnishing Lapland: Custom Furniture for Resorts, Cabins and Glass Igloos in Finland

Finnish Lapland has become one of Europe’s fastest-growing winter destinations. Rovaniemi alone recorded about 1.1 million overnight stays between November and March in a recent season, close to a fifth more than the winter before, with accommodation revenue up by a third; Rovaniemi Airport handled nearly a million passengers in 2024, up almost 30 %; and a new resort for 4,000 guests is being built outside the city. Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, Ruka and Pyhä tell the same story. Every new cabin, lodge and glass igloo needs furniture, and it needs it before the season opens. This guide is for resort developers, operators and their architects.

The Lapland furniture package

A resort unit cabin, lodge room, aurora cabin or glass igloo needs a compact, complete set: bed base and headboard, bedside units, wardrobe or open hanging, luggage bench, a kitchenette with integrated fridge, hob and sink for self-catering units, bathroom vanity, and a dining or breakfast table. Restaurants, receptions and spa areas are separate packages. Everything is built as a kit per unit, labelled and delivered in the sequence the units complete.

Seasonal deadlines

Lapland construction races the calendar: foundations in summer, buildings closed before the snow, interiors installed in October, guests in December. Furniture must be on site in September–October. Working backwards 6–8 days of road freight, 6–10 weeks of production, 3–4 weeks for the mock-up unit and approvals the order needs to be placed by May–June. We book production capacity for Lapland projects for that window.

Materials for −30 °C and dry indoor air

Furniture arrives in a truck that has crossed the Arctic Circle in winter and then lives in a wood-heated cabin at 20 % relative humidity. What we do about it:

•             Stable cores MDF and moisture-resistant boards under veneer and lacquer; solid wood only in narrow sections.

•             Birch and ash veneer for the Lapland palette, or painted fronts in soft whites and greys.

•             Acclimatisation 48–72 hours in the heated building before installation, stated on the delivery note.

•             Hardware and adhesives rated for cold transport.

•             M1 emission classification Finnish projects increasingly require M1-classified furniture and materials for indoor air quality; E1 boards as standard, M1-classified components on request.

Glass igloos and small units

Igloo and aurora-cabin interiors are tight: a bed designed for the view, storage under the bed, a wardrobe that doubles as a partition, and a bathroom vanity in a wet-room construction. We design to the unit’s plan and build the furniture as a single kit that goes through the door.

Durability for hospitality

Storage furniture to EN 14749, wear-resistant lacquer or HPL on horizontal surfaces, solid-wood edges where luggage hits, and a spare-parts pack (hinges, runners, a door front) delivered with the project.

Customs, VAT and delivery

Finland is an EU member: Turkish furniture enters duty-free with an ATR certificate; import VAT is 25.5 %, reported by VAT-registered businesses in the VAT return. Road freight from Istanbul to Rovaniemi and the resorts takes about 7–9 days via Sweden, or road plus ferry via Germany and the Baltic. We ship DAP or DDP to the site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you furnish 40 identical cabins? Yes; that is the ideal project: one design, batch production, kits per cabin.

Do you supply sauna interiors? Sauna benches and panelling in aspen or alder through our partners; the adjacent bathroom and changing-room joinery is ours.

What if the building is late? Kits are stored in our warehouse or a Finnish terminal until the building is dry and heated; we do not deliver into a cold shell.
