Fire-Rated Wooden Doors: Standards & Certified Manufacturing | RVK

As a Turkish manufacturer of custom timber doors and architectural joinery for international hotel, residential and commercial projects, one of the questions we hear most often from architects and developers is a fair one: “Can a wooden door really be fire-rated?” The short answer is yes — when it is engineered and certified correctly, a timber door resists fire exactly as well as its rating states. This guide explains what a fire-rated wooden door is, how it works, which standards apply, and how we manufacture and certify ours — written from the perspective of a workshop that produces these doors for export.

What is a fire-rated wooden door?

A fire-rated door is a door assembly with a certified fire-resistance rating that, when closed, restricts the passage of flame, smoke and heat between separate compartments of a building for a defined period of time. It is a core element of passive fire protection: it contains a fire at its source, slows its spread, and buys occupants the minutes they need to evacuate safely.

A common misconception is that fire doors must be made of steel. In reality, fire-rated timber doors are tested and classified to the same standards as steel doors. Where a door is visible and expected to sit in harmony with the surrounding architecture — hotel corridors and guest rooms, luxury residences, offices, restaurants — a certified wooden fire door is usually the preferred solution, combining rated protection with the warmth, acoustic comfort and finish quality that timber provides.

How a fire door works: the doorset as a system

A fire door’s performance does not come from a single part; it comes from a set of components engineered to work together. The essential elements are:

The fire-resistant core

The core of the leaf largely determines fire resistance. For qualifying projects we use a certified fire door core (for example EGGER Eurospan Fire Door Core); the technical detail is set out on our Certificates & Documents page.

Intumescent seals

Fitted into the gap between the leaf and the frame, these seals expand under heat, swelling to close the perimeter and block the passage of flame and hot gases around the edges of the door.

Cold smoke seals

While intumescent seals activate at high temperatures, cold smoke seals restrict the movement of smoke at ambient temperature. Because smoke inhalation is one of the leading causes of death in fires, this detail is critical.

The self-closing device

A fire door only performs when it is closed, so it is fitted with a controlled self-closing device and must close automatically in a fire. Fire doors should never be wedged or propped open; where they need to stay open, an approved electromagnetic hold-open device linked to the fire alarm is used so they release and close on activation.

Certified hardware: hinges, locks, panic hardware

Hinges, the lock/latch mechanism and, where required, panic hardware are all part of the certified assembly. This is the key point: fire resistance is the performance of the complete doorset — leaf, frame, seals, hardware and installation — not of the leaf alone. A certificate that covers “the leaf only” is not enough; the door is tested as a whole doorset.

Fire ratings explained: FD30, FD60, EI30, EI60

Fire doors are classified by how many minutes they resist the passage of flame and heat: 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. You will encounter two notations:

  • UK notation (FD): FD30, FD60, and so on. The number is the integrity period — resistance to the passage of flame and hot gases — in minutes.
  • European notation (EN 13501-2): performance is expressed in letters — E = integrity, I = insulation (limiting heat transfer to the unexposed face), W = radiation. EI30, for example, denotes a door that maintains both integrity and insulation for 30 minutes.

Note: the current minimum rating is FD30; the older “FD20” class is no longer used.

Fire door standards: BS 476-22, EN 1634-1, EN 16034 and EN 13501-2

For a door to be called “fire-rated,” it must be tested in an accredited laboratory against a recognised standard. The most frequently referenced are:

BS 476 Part 22 (British standard)

A long-established British standard measuring the fire resistance of non-loadbearing elements such as doors. The door is exposed to fire as a complete assembly (leaf, frame and hardware) and its integrity period is measured. An important current development: in the UK, BS 476 Part 22 is still accepted alongside BS EN 1634-1, but fire-resistance testing is being phased over to the European standard, with BS 476 fire-resistance methods scheduled for withdrawal in September 2029. Export projects increasingly expect EN test evidence.

EN 1634-1, EN 13501-2 and EN 16034 (European)

EN 1634-1 is the European test method for the fire resistance and smoke control of door and shutter assemblies; results are classified to EN 13501-2 (EI30, EI60, and so on). EN 16034 is the harmonised product standard for fire-resisting and smoke-control doorsets, which — together with the relevant door product standard — underpins CE marking within the EU. EN 1634-1 is generally regarded as the more demanding route, and a door that passes it will usually satisfy BS 476 Part 22 requirements as well.

National building regulations

Where fire doors are required, and to what rating, is set by each country’s building code — for example, Part B of the Building Regulations (Approved Document B) in the UK, and civil-defence fire codes in the Gulf. We manufacture and certify to the standard and rating required by the destination market. Testing itself must be carried out by a laboratory accredited to EN ISO 17025, and third-party certification (such as BM TRADA Q-Mark) provides independent assurance; you can see examples on our Certificates & Documents page.

Wooden vs steel fire doors

Both can be certified to the same rating when built and tested correctly; the choice usually comes down to the character of the space and the intensity of use:

  • Timber fire doors: chosen where appearance, acoustic comfort and integration with interior joinery matter — hotel rooms, luxury residences, offices and restaurants, where the door is seen and needs to belong to the architecture.
  • Steel fire doors: suited to heavy-duty, high-impact and industrial conditions — plant rooms, car parks and service areas where appearance is not the priority.

So, contrary to the “only steel is safe” myth, a certified timber door offers protection equivalent to a steel door of the same class. What matters is not the material but proven test performance and correct installation.

How we manufacture certified fire-rated timber doors

The reason we can talk about fire doors in this depth is that we build them. Our fire-rated doors are not pulled from a fixed catalogue; each one is produced to the project’s dimensions and specification, and every element is chosen to keep the finished door identical to the tested specimen.

Timber, cores and facings

We build around certified engineered fire cores (such as EGGER Eurospan Fire Door Core) rather than ordinary chipboard, and face them to suit the project — a smooth substrate for lacquer, or natural wood veneer in species selected to match the interior scheme (for example oak, walnut, ash or sapele). The core provides the rated performance; the facing provides the look.

CNC machining for dimensional precision

Leaves, rebates and hardware preparations are machined on CNC equipment. Precision here is not cosmetic: fire performance depends on the leaf-to-frame gaps and hardware positions matching the tested doorset, so consistent, repeatable machining is part of the fire specification, not just the finish.

Lacquer and veneer finishing

We apply both lacquer (lake) finishes — for painted, uniform or coloured surfaces — and natural veneer finishes, where the grain is matched to adjacent doors and wall panelling. In either case the finish is specified so it is consistent with the tested build and with the surrounding architectural woodwork.

Measurement and quality control

Every unit is produced to the client’s floor plan and specification, and each piece passes a dimensional and surface check before it leaves the workshop — because a certified fire door only performs if what is installed on site matches what was tested. The science behind fire-resistant timber

The fire behaviour of wood and the retardant treatments applied to it form an active field of academic research, which is a reminder of how much fire-rated timber depends on material science. For instance, a research team of Yıldız Technical University demonstrated that a recovered struvite material can act as a flame retardant in wooden structures, showing acceptable flame resistance comparable to commercial solutions. The study was published in Journal of Cleaner Production, a leading peer-reviewed journal in the field.

Certification and why it matters — including maintenance

A certificate means that the door installed on site is identical to the specimen tested in the laboratory. If the materials, seals, hardware or installation change, the door may no longer be the “tested door,” which is why certified products are supplied with a Declaration of Performance (DoP).   • Intumescent and smoke seals should be checked regularly and kept undamaged.
  • The self-closer should be confirmed to close the door fully.
  • Leaf-to-frame gaps should be kept within the specified tolerance.
  • The door should never be wedged or propped open.

Are wooden fire doors as safe as steel ones?
