Boiserie and Luxury Wood Wall Paneling for Villas and Hotels: A Manufacturer's Guide

Boiserie wall paneling (carved, moulded or veneered wood on the walls) is the most recognisable signature of a luxury interior, from eighteenth-century Parisian townhouses to today's five-star suites and private villas.

This guide explains the boiserie and wood wall paneling styles specified for villas and hotels today, the materials behind them, fire and installation requirements, and how RVK Furniture Decoration manufactures made-to-measure paneling in Turkey for export.

Quick answer: Boiserie is decorative wood wall paneling, traditionally carved, painted or gilded, and today also built as veneered, fluted or lacquered panels on stable MDF or plywood cores. For a villa or hotel, specify the style, finish, panel grid, the fire class required for the space, and how panels meet doors, skirting and lighting.

Where boiserie comes from

Boiserie developed in eighteenth-century French interiors. A well-known example is the boiserie from the Hôtel de Varengeville in Paris, made around 1736–52 in carved, painted and gilded oak and now displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The principle has not changed: joinery that turns walls into architecture.

Five paneling styles specified today

Style Look Typical use
Classic moulded boiserie Framed panels with mouldings, painted or lacquered Villas, suites, restorations
Carved and gilded Hand carving with gold-leaf details Statement rooms, reception halls
Veneered flush panels Book-matched walnut or oak, shadow gaps Villas, executive offices, suites
Fluted or slatted panels Vertical grooves or slats, often with hidden lighting Hotel lobbies, feature walls
Integrated joinery walls Paneling with concealed doors, TV niches, libraries Villa living rooms, penthouses

Materials and construction

  • Stable cores: MDF, moisture-resistant boards or plywood under lacquer and veneer, so large panels stay flat through dry winters and humid summers.
  • Mouldings: solid-wood or MDF profiles, machined to the architect's section drawings.
  • Veneer matching: book-matched or sequence-matched so that a wall reads as one piece of timber.
  • Finishes: lacquer in any RAL or NCS colour, natural veneer, and hand-applied gold leaf.
  • Integration: concealed (jib) doors, lighting channels and access panels are drawn into the panel grid.

Design research has also shown that decorative wall panels can be made from oak veneer production residue, turning natural features of wood into a sustainable design element.

Why wood walls matter in luxury interiors

A review of the research found reduced autonomic stress responses in rooms with wood compared with rooms without or with less wood. A separate review examined how wooden interior materials influence the indoor environment. For hotels and villas, wood paneling is both an aesthetic and a comfort decision.

Fire safety for hotel paneling

Wall linings in hotel corridors, lobbies and escape routes have reaction-to-fire requirements under the fire strategy (in Europe, classes under EN 13501-1). Fire-retardant boards and finishes are available for these areas; the required class must be confirmed with the fire engineer before production, and the evidence supplied with the order.

How we manufacture and ship paneling

  1. Verified site dimensions or a measured survey.
  2. Shop drawings with the full panel grid, mouldings, joints and details for doors and lighting.
  3. A finish sample (lacquer colour, veneer or gold leaf) for approval.
  4. Production with photographed quality control.
  5. Every panel numbered and packed in installation order, with an installation drawing.
  6. Installation by your team or organised by us, per project.

RVK's work includes wall cladding and bespoke joinery for villa and yalı (waterfront mansion) renovations and historic restorations in Turkey, alongside bespoke furniture for hotels, villas and luxury apartments abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between boiserie and wainscoting?

Wainscoting usually refers to panels on the lower part of a wall. Boiserie describes decorative paneling, often full height, with mouldings, carving or gilding.

Can you match existing historic paneling?

Yes, from measured drawings, photographs and a physical sample of the existing profile.

Can wall paneling be used in bathrooms?

Yes, with moisture-resistant cores and lacquer finishes, kept away from direct water.

Can panels meet hotel fire requirements?

Yes. Fire-retardant boards and finishes are used where the fire strategy requires a reaction-to-fire class; confirm the class before production.
