Lacquer vs Melamine vs Veneer Kitchen Cabinets: A Manufacturer's Comparison (2026)
By Volkan Kiyan, founder of RVK Mobilya Dekorasyon. Last updated: 23 September 2026.
Quick answer
Melamine is the cost-effective, low-maintenance choice for rental apartments, hotel rooms and cabinet interiors. Lacquer is the premium choice when you need an exact colour, a seamless handleless look or a surface that can be repaired later. Wood veneer is for projects that want real timber. Research on coated panels suggests that melamine and lacquer both perform best on vertical surfaces in dry rooms, so worktops need a harder material. For EU projects, the finished furniture must also meet the formaldehyde limit that applies from 6 August 2026.
What each finish is
Melamine
Decorative paper impregnated with resin and fused to particleboard or MDF under heat and pressure. The colour or wood pattern is printed, so every panel looks identical. Edges are finished with a separate edge band.
Lacquer
A liquid coating sprayed in several layers onto MDF (or over veneer), sanded between coats and cured. Any RAL or NCS colour is possible, from matt to high gloss, and profiled edges are coated in the same finish.
Wood veneer
A thin sheet of real wood bonded to a panel and protected with a clear or tinted lacquer. It gives natural grain, and no two panels are exactly the same.
Side-by-side comparison
| Criterion | Melamine | Lacquer | Lacquered veneer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Printed colour or wood pattern, uniform | Any colour, matt to high gloss, seamless edges | Real wood grain, each panel unique |
| Colour choice | Limited to the board maker's range | Practically unlimited (RAL/NCS) | Limited by wood species and stain |
| Water and humidity | Best in dry areas; a damaged edge lets moisture into the core | Best in dry areas; all faces and edges are coated | Best in dry areas; all faces and edges are coated |
| Repair | Chips are hard to repair invisibly | Scratches can be sanded and re-sprayed | Can be sanded and re-lacquered with care |
| Relative cost (our 2026 pricing) | 1.0× | About 2.1× | Depends on the wood species |
| Typical use | Rentals, hotel rooms, cabinet interiors | Premium kitchens, villas, handleless designs | Villas, hotel lobbies, wall panelling |
What the research says
- Use the right surface in the right place. Researchers at Karadeniz Technical University coated particleboard with lacquer, melamine paper, wood veneer and continuous-pressed laminate (CPL). They recommended melamine and lacquer for vertical surfaces in dry conditions, and CPL for horizontal surfaces and humid areas [1]. In practice: doors and side panels, yes; worktops, no.
- Not all melamine is equal. Boards faced with decor paper impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin performed better than those using urea-formaldehyde or mixed resins, and the paper and resin type affected surface resistance, especially to abrasion and cigarette burns [2]. Ask which resin your supplier's paper uses.
- The lacquer system matters. When cellulosic, polyurethane, polyester, synthetic and UV-cured systems were compared on solid beech and oak, the UV-cured system gave the hardest film, and polyurethane was among the systems with the best adhesion, well ahead of polyester [3]. "Lacquer" on a quotation is not a specification; ask for the system and the number of coats.
- The finish changes formaldehyde emissions. A test of five finishing methods on MDF and particleboard found that emissions depended on the method: heat-cured direct coatings and UV-cured veneer finishes gave the lowest values, PVC film and coated paper increased emissions, and low-pressure melamine laminate did not give the reduction the authors expected [4].
Formaldehyde: the EU rule that changed in August 2026
Since 6 August 2026, furniture and wood-based articles placed on the EU market must not release more than 0.062 mg/m³ of formaldehyde under the test-chamber conditions set in REACH Annex XVII, entry 77 [5]. That is half the E1 threshold of 0.124 mg/m³ that many buyers still quote, and the limit applies to the complete finished product, not just the board.
What this means for your order: ask for the panel supplier's emission documentation, and tell your manufacturer the destination country at quotation stage. When you send us a project, include the delivery country so we can specify panels for that market.
Cost and lead time: real numbers from our projects
Kitchen pricing from one of our partner factories in Türkiye (August 2026, per linear metre, cabinets and fronts only):
| Finish | Relative cost |
|---|---|
| Melamine-faced particleboard | 1.0× |
| Melamine-faced MDF | About 1.3× |
| High gloss | About 1.4× |
| Membrane (PVC foil) | About 1.7× |
| Lacquer | About 2.1× |
Worktops, appliances, hardware upgrades and freight are extra. Lacquer also takes longer, because each coat is sprayed, sanded and cured. As a reference, a batch of 30 lacquered interior doors takes us about 10 days to produce.
Which finish for which project?
- Rental apartments and hotel rooms: melamine carcasses and fronts, with CPL/HPL or stone worktops.
- Premium apartments and villas: lacquered MDF fronts, with melamine interiors to control cost.
- Real-wood interiors: lacquered veneer for fronts and wall panelling.
- Bathrooms and humid areas: fully sealed edges whichever finish you choose; never leave particleboard edges exposed.
Six questions to ask your manufacturer
- Which lacquer system (polyurethane, UV-cured or water-based), and how many coats?
- Is the melamine paper impregnated with melamine resin (MF) or a urea mix?
- What formaldehyde documentation does the board have, and does it meet the limit for your market?
- Can you share test results to EN 12720 (cold liquids), EN 12721 (wet heat), EN 12722 (dry heat), EN 15185 (abrasion) and EN 15186 (scratching)?
- How are edges finished: which edge band, or lacquer taken around the edge?
- Can we approve a physical sample of the exact colour and sheen before production?
From our production

A lacquer finish over natural wood veneer, and a two-drawer unit produced with the same finish. Physical samples like these are the most reliable way to agree on colour and sheen before production. See completed export work on our references page.
Frequently asked questions
Is lacquer more durable than melamine?
Not automatically. Melamine handles everyday wear well on flat panels, while lacquer durability depends on the system and the number of coats. Lacquer's advantage is that scratches can be repaired; melamine chips usually cannot be repaired invisibly.
Is melamine waterproof?
The surface is water-resistant, but the particleboard core is not. Water entering through a damaged edge or an unsealed drill hole can make the board swell, so edge sealing matters.
Which finish is best for hotel projects?
Guest rooms usually use melamine or CPL/HPL for cost and wear resistance. Lacquer and veneer are usually reserved for lobbies, suites and feature walls.
Does the finish affect indoor air quality?
Yes. Research shows that the finishing method changes formaldehyde emissions from the same board [4], and EU rules now limit emissions from the finished furniture [5].
