Why a hotel refurbishment should not be postponed

A study of 46 hotels found that guest satisfaction falls as the time since the last guest room renovation grows, and that satisfaction moves together with revenue and profitability measures (Bloom, 2015). Another study showed that hotel design quality significantly predicts guest satisfaction, which in turn shapes the intention to return and recommend (Zemke et al., 2017). Guest room furniture is therefore not a decoration item but an investment that affects occupancy and room rates.

The hotel sector in North Cyprus is closely tied to the Turkish economy: research covering 78 hotels in North Cyprus showed that economic developments in Turkey directly affect the island's hotel industry (Okumus, Altinay and Arasli, 2005). The same tie is an advantage on the supply side: a shared language, similar dimension and material habits, and a short sea route.

Materials and hardware

ItemStandard
Carcass18 mm melamine-faced chipboard or MDF; moisture-resistant board option around bathrooms and minibars
Doors and surfacesLacquered MDF (RAL or NCS colour), natural wood veneer, melamine, high gloss
JointsFlat-pack items with dowel + minifix connections
HardwareSamet soft-close runners and hinges (2-year warranty); Blum on request
Board classE1 board; the board used is stated in the quotation
Warranty24 months against manufacturing defects

Wood-based panels are among the main sources of indoor formaldehyde (Salthammer, Mentese and Marutzky, 2010), so in closed, air-conditioned guest rooms the board class should be written in the quotation. In the humid coastal climate of Cyprus we recommend moisture-resistant board around bathrooms and minibars.
